Bipartisan Senate Vote Confirming Kanter to Lead DOJ Antitrust Tolls the End of Big Tech’s Reign
Overwhelming vote proves that Congress supports Biden’s transformational strengthening of enforcement against the monopolists who threaten democracy
WASHINGTON— On Tuesday evening, the Senate voted 68-29 to confirm Jonathan Kanter to run the Justice Department's Antitrust Division. The vote reinforces a powerful new commitment from Congress to protect our democracy, individual liberties, and communities from corporate concentration.
In response, Barry Lynn, executive director at Open Markets Institute, issued the following statement:
“Justice is on the march in America. Jonathan Kanter now joins Lina Khan, Tim Wu, and President Joe Biden in the great task of building a more safe, fair, and open America by breaking the concentrations of monopoly power that have been harming society.
“Kanter has long stood tall against the grave and growing threats posed by Google, Facebook, Amazon and other predatory corporations that have concentrated control over communications and commerce on the internet. We’re proud that senators from both parties joined together to support his nomination to lead the fight to rebuild American democracy and liberty in the 21st century.
“Coming on the heels of the European Commission’s big victory against Google this week, and the terrifying revelations about Facebook’s society-destroying algorithms, the Senate’s vote means it’s time for Big Tech executives to figure out how to make a living by actually serving the American people, rather than picking their pockets and poisoning their minds.”
