Navigating Crisis: Journalism at a Turning Point

The International Press Institute hosted their three day World Congress in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina on May 22nd-24th, 2024, titled “Navigating Crisis: Journalism at a Turning Point.” Gathering leading journalists, editors, and publishers from around the world, the summit provided a vital space for media professionals, thought leaders, and innovators to explore new solutions, foster understanding, and critically examine the role of the media in addressing the great crises of the times.

Center for Journalism and Liberty at Open Markets Director Dr. Courtney Radsch appeared at the conference on a panel entitled, “Making Big Tech Work for Us,” and engaged in the ways to shape the rules for Big Tech in order to secure the future of public interest media. In this discussion, Dr. Radsch joined Khadija Patel, Paula Miraglia, and Teresa Ribeiro to emphasize the need for journalists to promptly understand the importance of assigning value to journalism as it is increasingly used to train AI models. This heightened understanding will help combat Big Tech’s distorted narratives of innovation and geopolitical competition across public policy debates and institutions. The panelists covered specific solutions for valuing the news fairly, such as media bargaining codes and collaborative negotiations among small publishers. Watch the panel at the link above.
