Washington, DC -- The following is a statement from Sarah Miller, Deputy Director of the Open Markets Institute, in response to the New York State Attorney General Letitia James' announcement of a new investigation into Facebook:

This morning's announcement is a major step forward in the broadening effort on the part of our democratic institutions to address Facebook's monopoly power. The bipartisan coalition of state attorneys general, led by NY AG Letitia James, is following in the footsteps of the historic investigation into Microsoft, which also began with leadership from the states. This investigation will also serve to put further pressure on federal enforcers, who have a track record of inaction, to protect consumers, competitors, and our democracy from the range of dangers that Facebook's extraordinary power presents.
