All of us at Open Markets were deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Robert Pitofsky. Bob was not only an aggressive enforcer of antitrust law, as Chairman of the Federal Trade Commission in the 1990s. He was also a scholar of American history, who understood that antimonopoly enforcement was fundamental to the protection of our liberties and democracy. Over the last generation, Bob was one of the leading champions of ensuring the independence of America’s free press from concentrated corporate power. Our sincere hope is that every antimonopoly enforcer today study Bob’s writings and work, and follow his lead. Bob was a true American patriot. We will greatly miss his wisdom and his public spirit.
