CJL Director Courtney Radsch Testifies Before California Senate Judiciary Committee

In her testimony to the California Senate Judiciary Committee on December 5, 2023, Center for Journalism and Liberty at Open Markets Director Dr. Courtney Radsch explained that “the crisis facing journalism is not a problem of the news industry’s own making,” but rather of “legal regulatory frameworks, [including unprecedented exemptions for Big Tech companies,] privilege tech platforms over the press and give the former unfettered power to set the rules.”

Combined with tech’s dominance and control, this has driven declines in news industries around the world. She also spoke to solutions such as news media bargaining codes, and the need to rethink how we assign value to news content shared by the platforms and increasingly used by generative AI companies/large language models (LLMs).
