Open Markets submission to the MN House Commerce Finance and Policy

Open Markets submitted a letter from Claire Kelloway, program manager for Fair Food and Farming Systems in support the Consumer Grocery Pricing Fairness Act. The letter argues that the bill is vital in leveling the playing field for independent grocers, who are often at a disadvantage compared to large corporations like Walmart and Amazon. These grocer giants use their market power to gain priority pricing deals, rebates, and other concessions from suppliers, which hurts independent grocers and increases prices for consumers, especially in rural and low-income areas. This bill would secure that price differences would be based on legitimate cost savings, such as bulk purchases, rather than discriminatory practices by big retailers as well as strengthen existing laws, like the Robinson-Patman Act.

The hearing will be streamed here.
